In restricting ourselves to fundamental obligations, and to different things so long thus far as is favorable thereto, God’s law as the lone standard to guide us how to commend and appreciate him, is made the standard of our commitment. Our pledge is no new standard of obligation, however another attach to make the law of God our standard.

Indeed, even Adam’s commitment to consummate acquiescence in the agreement of works was nothing else. His untrustworthiness in his home of blamelessness, made it appropriate, that he ought to be limited by his own assent or commitment, just as by the authority of God. Our flaw in this life, and the allurements which encompass us, make it needful, that we, in like way, ought to be bound to a similar principle, both by the authority of God, and our own commitment. It is in the law of God, that all our deputed power to order others, or to tie ourselves is designated to us.

The necessity of good obligations by the law of God obliges us to utilize all legal way to advance the exhibition of them; and subsequently requires human laws and self-commitment, and the recognition of them as helpful for it. Nay they are additionally explicitly needed in his law, as his statutes for aiding and supporting us in to our obligation. In making legitimate pledges, just as in causing human laws we to apply the deputed authority of God, the incomparable Lawgiver, allowed to us in his law, in the way which his law recommends, and in acquiescence to its remedy.

In shaping our promises as an initiated mandate of God’s love, which he hath expected us to get, notice, and keep unadulterated and whole, Psalm lxxvi. 11. and cxix. 106. and lvi. 12. Isaiah xix. 18, 21. and xlv. 23, 24. and xliv. 5. Jeremiah l. 5, 2 Corinthians viii.5,- – we act decisively as indicated by the bearing of his law, and in compliance to his clout in it, – restricting ourselves with a bond, restricting our spirit with a bond, Numbers xxx. 2-11- – restricting ourselves by that which we utter with our lips stanzas 2, 6, 12, – restricting ourselves with a coupling vow,- – restricting ourselves- – restricting our spirit by our own pledge – our own bond, sections 4,7,14.

In framing our promise, we, as indicated by the solution of his own law, gravely comprise God, who is the incomparable Lawgiver and Lord of the still, small voice,- – the observer of our self-commitment, and the Guarantee, generous to compensate our zealous satisfaction of it, and evenhandedly to rebuff our dishonest infringement of it. The more timely and dependable perception of God’s law, despite our complex sicknesses and allurements, and the more viable advancement of his wonder in that, is simply the finish of our commitment, just as of human laws of power.

What’s more, by a due respect to their coupling power, as above expressed, is this end advanced,- – as thus the commitment of God’s law is the more profoundly intrigued on our psyches, and we are quieted down to compliance to it, and stopped from violating it.- – In outcome of our arrangement of our promise, concerning its issue, way, and end, as recommended by God, He doth, and fundamentally should approve it in the entirety of its terrible solemnities, requiring us by his law, to pay it as an obligation of obligation,- – to perform and satisfy it as a commitment to obligations, and a commitment which remains upon or against us, Numbers xxx. 5, 7, 9, 11. with Deuteronomy xxiii. 21-23. Hymn lxxvi. 11. and 1. 14. Ecclesiastes v.4, 5. Matthew v. 33.

In submission to this heavenly necessity, and thinking about our promise, in that exact structure, wherein God in his law, receives and approves it, and expects it to be satisfied, we pay, perform, and satisfy it as a bond, wherewith we, in acquiescence to Him, have bound ourselves, to try widespread dutifulness to his law, as our solitary standard of confidence and habits. Whoever doth not, in his endeavors to comply with human laws or to satisfy self-commitment, consider them as having that coupling power which the law of God permits them; he pours disdain on them, as statutes of God, and on the law of God for permitting them a coupling power.
